The Dark Mod

The Dark Mod is a fan-made project built for fans — a love letter to the first two Thief games, born out of the community's disappointment with the later commercial entries in the series.

Nothing recognizable remains of the original id Tech 4 engine: the developers completely rewrote the artificial intelligence, created unique assets, models, and a soundscape from scratch to recreate that signature gothic steampunk atmosphere where shadows are your only ally.

The Dark Mod's gameplay prioritizes maximum immersion and tactical depth. Sound plays a decisive role: you physically feel the difference between stepping on carpet and the hollow echo of footsteps on tile, and the transition from the roar of heavy rain outside to the muffled quiet of an interior is executed at the level of the best modern titles. The mechanics for interacting with the environment — including parkour and swordplay — have been significantly refined compared to the classics. Guards in TDM are extremely perceptive and can spot you at the slightest careless movement, making every heist a tense ordeal.
