Hollywood Holocaust Rethinked is a fan project by Team Misfit, reimagining the first map of Duke Nukem 3D using the modern Polymer renderer and high-quality assets.
The idea behind the mod is to show what the original level would have looked like if mid-90s developers had access to 3D models, advanced lighting, and more powerful hardware. As a result, the classic map received a visual overhaul: replaced sprites and sector geometry partially reworked into 3D models, dynamic lighting, cutscenes, and new decorative elements.
The level's overall structure remains recognizable, but with small expansions and additional areas to freshen up the familiar gameplay. New enemy models and environmental objects have been added, along with extra visual details that make the level feel more contemporary.
However, the project feels like a technical experiment. Despite an impressive visual leap, it has its issues: inconsistent performance, not always convincing model animations, visual and audio bugs, and new elements that don't always integrate smoothly into the original game logic.
Ultimately, Hollywood Holocaust Rethinked comes across more as an engine showcase and proof-of-concept remake of a classic level than a fully polished re-release.
