HLFX: Lost in Black Mesa is a short single-player mod for Half-Life based on the updated HLFX engine, featuring enhanced graphical effects and classic gameplay. The mod tells the story of Alex Jones, a young scientist who finds himself in an HEV suit on the day of the disaster.

From the first moments, visual changes catch the eye: lighting, shadows, reflections, and effects like heat distortions and bump mapping — everything looks fresh and detailed. The atmosphere of the grim and desolate Black Mesa is recognizable and preserves the spirit of the original, yet feels more modern.
The gameplay is built around three levels, including laboratories and part of the monorail. Sections with electrical panels, doors with code locks, and small puzzles enliven the playthrough. Secret areas are located on each level, and the mod even keeps track of them — a reward for attention to detail.
The size of HLFX: Lost in Black Mesa is modest — completion takes about an hour to an hour and a half. This is more of a technical demonstration of the engine's capabilities rather than a full-fledged campaign — and the design is clearly oriented towards this.
Although the installation may seem confusing and requires running through the Xash3D engine, it's worth it. Additionally, there's a classic simple version that doesn't have the new graphics but installs in the usual way.
