Sweet Half-Life perfectly continues the spirit of the original Half-Life, adding dynamic gameplay, new types of weapons, enemies, and unexpected plot twists. The campaign quickly engages with short but intense maps, with comfortable pacing, minimal backtracking, and pleasant variety of gameplay mechanics. The presence of an alternative ending and the ability to choose different paths improves replayability.
Several unusual design decisions give the mod character: scientists in HEV suits, humorous references to sci-fi (for example, to "A Space Odyssey") and anime graphics elements — all this creates an unusual but attractive atmosphere. Scripted scenes are executed cinematically, and the music blends organically with the gameplay, adding a light comedic touch.
Nevertheless, there are controversial moments. Some puzzles are veiled and require unconventional solutions (hidden buttons, jumps, crouching), which often forces you to return to the last save or look for hints. Individual missions and battles can seem overly difficult or with too sharp transitions, which slightly disrupts the overall impression of the mod.
The mod works better on older versions of Half-Life — when running in Steam, incompatibilities are possible, so on modern game versions it's recommended to play the updated version of the mod — Sweet Half-Life: Relit. Also, voice acting sometimes sounds unnatural and lacks emotions, which reduces the expressiveness of dialogues.
Overall, Sweet Half-Life is a dynamic and unusual adventure in the Half-Life universe — with cinematic scenes, new mechanics, strong atmosphere, and a pinch of humor. The mod will appeal to those who want a fresh look at a familiar game but are ready to tolerate unconventional presentation, controversial moments, and some technical nuances
