Brutal Doom completely updates classic DOOM, turning it into dynamic, brutal and action-packed experience that feels fresh even decades later. The mod reworks the core gameplay, making combat faster, more intense and more dangerous, forcing players to relearn survival in familiar levels.

Weapons receive new animations, powerful sounds and alternate fire modes: shotguns tear enemies apart, automatic weapons become devastating forces, plasma weaponry and the BFG clear entire rooms, while the chainsaw and melee combat allow finishing off opponents with brutal finishers. Enemies become more aggressive, use new attacks and push forward more often, restoring the feeling of constant threat.

Special attention is paid to violence and damage physics: demons lose limbs, continue fighting while wounded, and every shot feels weighty and deadly.

Despite all its brutality, the mod stays true to the original DOOM — enemy behavior and level structure remain recognizable, but require new tactics and reactions. Brutal Doom transforms the classic shooter into an aggressive, adrenaline-fueled experience that makes you see old WADs in a new light and leaves little desire to return to the vanilla version.

How to install a mod Brutal Doom

To run the mod, you will need the GZDoom engine and doom2.wad or FreeDoom as the iwad.

  1. Make sure doom2.wad or freedoom2.wad is located in the GZDoom folder

  2. Move the mod's .pk3 file to the GZDoom folder

  3. Drag and drop the .pk3 file onto gzdoom.exe

  4. Play!

You can also create a Launcher.bat. This is suitable for running more complex mod setups where the loading order of mods matters, or to launch the game via a shortcut.

How to create a launcher for running mods based on GZDoom

Create a text file in the GZDoom folder, you can name it Launcher. The text can look like this, depending on which files you're using:

gzdoom.exe -iwad freedoom2.wad -file "brutalv22test4.pk3"

-iwad must always come first, and the number of files after -file can be unlimited — just write them in quotes separated by spaces, like this:

gzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file "addon1.pk3" "addon2.pk3" "addon3.pk3" "addon4.pk3"

Change its format from .txt to .bat by simply renaming it. Now you can launch your mod setups with a double-click on this launcher.
