The level design in The Trap is executed at the highest level, with every room thoughtfully crafted to create a sense of an intelligent and well-designed world that fully utilizes the capabilities of the GoldSrc engine. The mod combines puzzle elements with combat scenes, allowing you to encounter enemies in some test chambers and fight them, making the gameplay more dynamic and engaging.
The puzzles are diverse and sometimes extremely challenging, requiring attentiveness, logic, and patience. At the same time, the gameplay remains comfortable thanks to smart introduction of new mechanics and gradual implementation of complex tasks. The mod is inspired by Portal, but uses many original concepts: there are unusual chambers, unique items like the renamed "Death Ray", as well as two well-designed boss fights that require wit and strategy.
The mod's story is interesting and darker than Portal's, with unexpected twists and the appearance of secondary characters that add depth to the plot. The atmosphere is enhanced by thoughtful sound design and music, although some effects, such as teleportation sounds, can be too loud. The mod also offers alternative completion paths and achievements that unlock additional possibilities and endings.
Despite occasional bugs related to the engine and the difficulty of some levels, The Trap remains a unique and outstanding mod for Half-Life, demonstrating how creatively one can use an old engine and combine puzzles with action. This is one of the smartest and most captivating mods for Half-Life, capable of providing you with a truly unconventional and engaging experience.
