Ambermoon is the second part of an unfinished trilogy by Thalion Software, the sequel to Amberstar, and one of the last major RPGs for the Amiga, released during the system’s twilight years. At the time, the game amazed players with its technical achievement: seamless transitions between the isometric world map, fully 3D dungeons, and detailed turn-based combat looked incredible for 1993. The story continued the events of the first game but stood on its own, allowing new players to immerse themselves in the world of Lannor — a planet struck by a meteor, filled with mysteries and an ancient evil ready to return.
Ambermoon stood out for its scale. Players could freely travel across a vast map, enter cities, explore caves, develop their party, and interact with many NPCs. The atmosphere was enriched by high-quality Amiga music and an abundance of graphical details — every location was crafted with care. The hybrid system was especially charming: an isometric overworld combined with fully 3D interiors and dungeons, making exploration truly engaging.
However, the game was also challenging: old-school quests required attention, and battles punished mistakes. Progress often demanded keeping notes, drawing maps, and experimenting with combat tactics. This hardcore nature was both a strength and a drawback: fans of deep RPGs loved it, while more casual players could get stuck early on.
Upon release, Ambermoon received high praise from Amiga magazines, especially for its graphics, depth, and rich world. Today it is regarded as one of the peaks of early 90s European RPG design, and also as a symbol of the end of the Amiga era.
