First Day of Modstalgia — Who We Are and Why We Created This Site
Website news
Hello everyone!
Today is the first day of Modstalgia’s indexing, and I want to tell you who we are and why we created this project. The site is still in an early development stage but is already working and performing its core functions.
Many years ago, I was one of the founders of a site dedicated to game modifications. It was quite successful, but due to internal conflicts among the co-founders, it was eventually shut down. Later, I tried to launch a new project, but for various reasons, it never came to life.
Now, together with another enthusiast, we have finally reached the launch of a new site. Unlike the previous project, Modstalgia is not so narrowly specialized and does not focus on just one or a few games. By retro games, we mean games released 15 or more years ago. This definition or concept might change slightly over time, but for now, we stick to it.
Why Modstalgia, if there are already many similar sites?
Yes, the internet has plenty of niche and large projects like Nexus Mods. But we noticed some things missing even from the most popular among them.
What will make Modstalgia different?
6 languages. We fully support English, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, German, and Spanish. Every piece of content is available in all these languages thanks to AI-based automatic translation, which we consider to be quite high quality. We also implemented comment translation so people worldwide can communicate freely even without knowing each other’s languages. No other site in our niche currently offers this feature.
Focus exclusively on retro games. Most major sites promote mods for modern games. As a result, mods for old games remain in the shadows. We do the opposite — giving priority to modifications for old games. If you’re an author of mods, addons, or engines for an old game and want your work not to get lost in the flood of mods for new games — our site is the best choice.
We have 4 types of files besides mods:
Addons. Sometimes a mod is so small or meant to extend another mod that it’s better to highlight it as a separate category — addons.
Engines. Few modding sites have a category for engines, which is probably why most authors host their work only on GitHub or personal sites, not uploading them to major platforms. We provide such a platform for them.
Fan games. Surprisingly, no major site offers a convenient catalog of fan games for classic titles. We’re ready to provide a platform for creators of such games, so people can easily find them, for example, by visiting a retro game’s page or using filters.
What else?
Emphasis on filters. When uploading content, we fill in lots of different information so you can conveniently filter posts by your interests — no dumping everything into a generic “Miscellaneous” category.
Emphasis on project blogs. Like the well-known, though somewhat old, ModDB, we pay a lot of attention to project blogs. Authors will be able not only to inform their audience about development progress but also promote their projects, since blogs will appear on the main page and on a dedicated blogs page.
Mandatory installation instructions. Mods often have a bad reputation because it’s unclear how to install them, since many authors don’t provide instructions. We solve this problem.
Support for vertical images. If you want to share a vertical screenshot from a game, you no longer need to tilt it diagonally to fit more content, as all images on the site are horizontal.
This is just the beginning. We’re already planning many new features not found on other platforms. Some of them may even become real breakthroughs in this niche. Stay with us and let’s go through this journey together!
