Duke-RT is an ambitious project to bring modern graphics technologies to Duke Nukem 3D. The project is based on a fork of Raze, whose rendering engine has been completely overhauled to support ray tracing powered by NVIDIA NRI.

Features

  • Full support for Path Tracing, Ray Reconstruction, as well as DLSS and FSR3 frame generation.

  • PBR materials: Implementation of physically based rendering (metal, roughness, and emissive maps). The first episode has already been fully reworked, with the rest in progress.

  • Modder toolkit: A built-in real-time light and material editing system, allowing the community to create their own projects.

  • Runs on Vulkan and D3D12 (D3D12 + HDR recommended for the best experience).

The project is currently in development. The first episode is fully complete and tested. Future updates are planned to include:

  • Completion of materials for episodes 2 and 3.

  • Addition of volumetric effects such as rocket smoke.

  • Automatic exposure.

  • Improved rendering of water, mirrors, and glass surfaces.

  • Bug fixes on maps with complex Build engine architecture.

How to install a mod Duke-RT

To run the mod, you must have Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour installed.

  1. Extract the archive

  2. Run the file launch-duke-rt.cmd to search for normal maps from Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

  3. Allow the launcher to copy the normal maps into the release-overlay folder

    • The mod can work without these copied normal maps, but the image will be incomplete, as the overlay will be missing additional normal map data

  4. Play!
