EDuke32 is developed by the community and was originally conceived as a way to bring the game to modern operating systems without emulation, while also expanding its capabilities.

The engine significantly improves upon the original: it adds high-resolution support, modern OpenGL renderers (including Polymer), dynamic lighting, bug fixes and stability improvements, as well as a fully-featured console and an extended scripting language.

Beyond running the original game and mods, EDuke32 is widely used for modding — it provides powerful editing tools (such as Mapster32) and additional features for developers, making it one of the most advanced Build Engine ports.
