After the Black Mesa incident, a faction of H.E.C.U. soldiers deserted, taking scientific staff hostage and stealing classified research equipment. This rules out simply destroying the base. You are a Black Operations operative, and your mission is to infiltrate their hideout in the north, identify the leader, locate the stolen equipment, and get out alive.

Throughout the mission you encounter several unique NPCs — base workers and guards, each with their own voice lines and individual model. Among them is a partner — a female Black Operations operative with ambiguous motives.

Deep Cover is a full single-player mod faithful to the spirit of the original Half-Life, but expanded with several new mechanics:

  • Inventory system — key items are displayed on the HUD; keycards, fuses, and other objects are used to solve puzzles.

  • Mission log — tracks current objectives and notes, so you don't lose the thread when returning after a break.

  • Hint system — notes marked with an asterisk are placed near key locations; simply approach and look at them to read.

  • Interactive screens that allow you to make choices affecting the outcome of combat situations.

Locations span the base's interior rooms, fuel storage, warehouse hangars, snowy open areas, and an underground tunnel — with the verticality and careful movement the mod is known for.

New custom weapon models have been added — a knife, pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, SMG, and a STINGER in place of the standard RPG. Enemies range from deserting H.E.C.U. soldiers in white winter camouflage to elite guards, as well as alien creatures — pit drones, voltigores, and poison headcrabs. Enemies drop varied loot on death depending on their loadout, making combat clearances feel rewarding.
