Half-Life Prison is one of the most ambitious and original modifications for Half-Life. Despite its modest beginning in prison locations, the mod's true strength is revealed later when the action moves to a redesigned Xen. It's there that the mod astounds with its scale, original ideas, and rich atmosphere. Organic corridors, interdimensional rooms, massive mechanisms, and even entire trains create a sense of a cohesive yet very unusual world.
The gameplay combines complex puzzles with intense battles that require attention and endurance. Sometimes the fights are so difficult they seem unfair, especially near the finale. Among enemies, you can encounter not only familiar creatures but also new opponents - for example, mini-versions of Gargantua. The battles with Gonarch and the unique boss Pantagruel deserve special attention. Also impressive is how the levels interweave with each other, forming a closed loop, and the unusual introductory video that sets the tone for the entire adventure.
Technically, the mod isn't without rough edges: there are bugs, crashes, and annoying moments like enemies spawning literally out of thin air. The balance is also questionable - more casual players are recommended to play the mod on easy difficulty, as the challenges are extremely harsh anyway. But all this pales in comparison to the overall execution level: excellent map design, unconventional solutions, and an abundance of fresh ideas make the mod feel more like a full game than amateur work.
Half-Life Prison is a rich and sometimes merciless adventure that impresses with its thoughtfulness, artistic style, and depth. For some, it will be a real trial, while for others - pure enjoyment from start to finish.
