Arkista's Ring turns the classic fantasy shooters Heretic and Hexen on the Doom engine into a vibrant sci-fi & sorcery adventure with an old-school adventure fiction atmosphere. The project is inspired by mid-20th century pulp fiction and reimagines the NES game of the same name, completely changing the genre and presentation of the original. Instead of traditional fantasy, a peculiar world emerges where magic coexists with technology, cults and false gods intertwine with galactic intrigue, and the story is presented as a dynamic action movie with elements of black humor.

The central figure of the entire series is Christine Silvercross, a daring space elf whose fate becomes the starting point for shaping the Arkista's Ring universe. In the Heretic mod, she is the main character involved in a dangerous mission related to finding a powerful artifact known as the Ring of Arkista. The plot revolves around her attempt to atone for past mistakes, survive on a hostile planet, and confront forces threatening not only her but entire worlds. Later, as the series develops, a wider circle of characters forms around her, especially in the Hexen version, where the story goes beyond a single heroine and becomes a chronicle of an entire world.

The gameplay in Arkista's Ring differs noticeably from vanilla Heretic and Hexen. The original Heretic TC uses a non-linear level structure where route choice matters, and some paths prove easier or, conversely, extremely dangerous. Instead of the usual weapon set, the player receives futuristic guns and magical artifacts, and character development is connected not only to finding new weapons but also to upgrading starting weapons with the Ring of Arkista. This creates a sense of progression without sharp difficulty spikes and keeps even initial weapons relevant throughout the entire game.

Special attention in the project is given to the arsenal and inventory. Weapons feel powerful and diverse, and items often play not a decorative but a critically important role in progression, opening access to secrets and alternative paths. The balance is shifted toward more aggressive and dynamic combat, where enemies pose a real threat. Enemies in Arkista's Ring range from cultists to robots and space creatures, emphasizing the genre mixing and stylistic freedom of the project.

The Damn Dirty Dwarves addon develops the ideas of the original mod, turning any Heretic maps into a full-fledged space-fantasy adventure. Story-wise, the action moves to the planet Yarro, where the player must face ancestral ghosts, machines gone out of control, and religious fanatics. This addon completely changes the feel of Heretic, reworking weapons, enemies, mechanics, and visual style, making the game more dynamic and challenging. The mod gains additional value through adaptation for major map collections like Masters of Chaos and Faithless Trilogy, allowing classic mapsets to be reimagined within the Arkista's Ring universe.

The Martyrs of Mayhem version for Hexen goes even further, turning the game into a dark sci-fi epic with new character classes, unique weapons, reworked monsters, interface, and sound design. Unlike the original Hexen, where the player spends a long time collecting super-weapon parts, here the emphasis is on gradually strengthening the main armament, making character development more tangible and balanced. Story-wise, the heroes find themselves on the technocratic planet Idos, ruled by the artificial intelligence Medusa posing as a deity. The story revolves around attempting to destroy this false cult and escape from a dying world, with Christine remaining an important part of the lore, even if the player controls other characters.

Arkista's Ring is valuable not only as a total conversion but also as an authorial interpretation of classic games. The series doesn't strive to be strictly "canonical" or realistic, but on the contrary, emphasizes its adventurous nature, allowing itself stylistic liberty, eccentric imagery, and deliberate genre eclecticism.

Despite some controversial decisions in level design and balance, the project remains one of the most distinctive and unconventional for Heretic and Hexen, especially for those who want to see these games in a radically new light. Arkista's Ring doesn't just change the visual appearance and weapons, but offers a different perspective on what these classic shooters can be if taken beyond the boundaries of familiar fantasy.
