Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Succession Wars aims to expand the legacy of the first two Heroes of Might and Magic games, emphasizing the recognizable pixel art style and adding new creatures, characters, and other content rendered in the same graphics.

Features
The core gameplay is close to Heroes III, but elements from Heroes II and new mechanics are introduced.
Classes as factions: in the mod, as in Heroes II, each town has only one corresponding class. That is, instead of general categories "Might" and "Magic," each faction is represented by a specific class — for example, instead of the "Castle" faction there is the "Knight" faction, and so on.
Each class has one additional unit, since Heroes II had six creature levels per class, while Heroes III has seven. The new unit is placed at mid-levels — 3, 4, or 5.
Classic factions: Knight, Barbarian, Sorceress, Wizard, Warlock, Necromancer, and new factions: Witch — a variation on the class theme from Heroes III with its own features; Dervish — a desert faction created based on Heroes II neutrals and new creatures; Heretic — focused on might, with a composition different from the class of the same name in Heroes III.
The battle screen has been redesigned to Heroes III standards: the field is enlarged, range penalties are introduced, and the mobility of most flying creatures is reduced.
New animations for all units: defense, turning, movement start and end.
Hand-drawn style of Heroes II, instead of 3D rendering of Heroes III. Original Heroes II artwork is used wherever possible, and new artwork is created in the same style when necessary.
The map includes all objects from Heroes II and is supplemented with objects according to Heroes III standards: creature dwellings, banks, conservatories, and others.
Terrain types: dirt, sand, grass, snow, swamp, desert, wasteland, lava, water, and rock.
The magic system and artifact system differ from the classic games.
The hero roster is increased compared to Heroes II, since Heroes II had nine heroes per class, while Heroes III requires sixteen heroes per town.
Dynamic castle appearance on different terrain types and full implementation of Bad Luck, as in Heroes II.
As in the first two games, not all units have an upgraded version.

The authors strive to give players both warm nostalgic memories and fresh ideas, transforming HoMM3 into HoMM2.5.
