HoMM3: Day of Reckoning (DoR) is a fan-made expansion for HoMM3 that organically continues the game's lore and its official expansions, carefully introducing something new, such as the Viking and Dark Elf factions.
Three new factions
Palace - a friendly ice city of the Nisse, Vikings, and Snow Elves of Vori. The Palace embodies the harsh beauty of the north — endless, eternal expanses of iridescent snow, snow-covered forests, as well as clear starry skies and shimmering lights. Its image carries a note of nostalgia intertwined with the merciless power of frost and the majesty of wild nature. This idea forms the foundation of the entire city concept and is reflected in every detail — from the town screen to the updated visual appearance of creatures and even the musical theme.
Grotto - a neutral underground town inhabited by dwarves and dark elves who were once connected to the continent of Antagarich.
Forge - an evil dystopian version of the Heavenly Forge; a city created by the elf Castor, brutally industrializing Deyja with the help of remnants of ancient technology. Elements related to the Forge were created based on consultations with Heroes III lead developer Gregory Fulton to get as close as possible to the original concept and vision of the faction. However, if desired, the faction can be disabled outside of the campaign.
HoMM3: Day of Reckoning adds alternative units in the style of Heroes IV. For example, the Palace town can build either Nisse or Vikings, but not both. Old factions also received alternative units, such as Dryads for Rampart and Wood Elementals and Metal Elementals for Conflux. Neutral units such as the Enchanter and Sharpshooter have been added to specific factions — not for recruitment, but to match the lore and to neutralize the morale penalty when mixing factions.
Unlike many WoG/VCMI mods, DoR is being developed on its own platform and adds new towns to the game without replacing existing ones — meaning old towns remain available alongside the new ones. The team is reworking individual elements from previous fan projects but adapting them to the overall concept of the expansion.
Development of Day of Reckoning began no later than 2021 and continues despite changes in the team composition. The release date is unknown.
