RollerCoaster Tycoon is one of the most iconic games in the economic simulation genre and a classic example of a tycoon game from the late '90s. Developed almost single-handedly by Chris Sawyer, it puts the player in charge of an amusement park with full control over construction, finances, and maintenance.
At launch, the game impressed with its depth: not only do you build paths and place rides, but you also design roller coasters yourself — from simple to incredibly complex and dizzying ones. Staff management, price balancing, visitor moods, and route efficiency all impact your park's success.
The graphics use an isometric style, with detailed animation, a wide variety of objects, and responsive visitor simulation. Despite lacking 3D or modding capabilities, the game offers dozens of scenarios and hours of thoughtful gameplay.
Over the years, RollerCoaster Tycoon became the foundation for an entire series and inspired many successors. Even without mod support or extended customization, the original remains a shining example of how deep and engaging virtual business management can be.
