A mod that revives 4x4 Evolution 2: it adds widescreen support, improves texture resolution, fixes game bugs, and includes content from other entries in the series. 4x4 Evo 2 EvoR Edition is a comprehensive project focused on enhancing, preserving, and supporting the legacy of the 4x4 Evolution game series. Originally known for its remarkable openness, 4x4 Evolution offered a Gran Turismo-style career mode, online multiplayer, licensed vehicles, a built-in track editor, and native support for custom content. EvoR Edition not only restores online functionality but also delivers a wide range of updates, improvements, and fixes to keep the game alive and evolving.
What’s been done:
1. Based on a similar mod whose development ended in 2008 — 4x4 Evolution Revolution Patch 013.
2. The menu background was changed to match the original Evo 2; the red vignette was replaced with blue, and the 3D 3. Revo logo was removed.
4. All "unofficial" tracks and vehicles were removed.
5. Ford vehicles from the original Evo were brought back in all their variety.
6. Monster trucks are once again available for purchase in career mode.
7. Fixed visual issues when installing shock absorbers.
8. Includes bonus content from the GameCube version.
9. Higher-quality music from the Xbox version, edited to start at the correct points.
10. The 180 km/h speed limit was removed.
11. The unfinished front-rear suspension angle setting was disabled (though it still appears in the menu).
12. Unrealistic oil pressure readings and other similar elements were disabled.
13. The minimap size was reduced (it was too large for widescreens).
14. All career missions and races are fully playable.
15. A new championship, World Championship Series 2, was added by the author. It includes maps not found in the original series and offers slightly higher rewards.
16. Prize payouts were adjusted for all extended and non-short championships.
17. The endurance championship now awards 2.6 million in prize money.
What couldn’t be fixed:
1. The author couldn’t restore support for Monster Trucks from Monster Truck Madness, which was broken in Revo Patch 013 (it worked fine in Patch 012). The option was renamed humorously instead.
2. The new, unfinished camera modes (especially the orbit cam) couldn’t be removed, so this “quirk” remains.
IMPORTANT: When launching the game, make sure the "Renderer" setting is set to "Direct3D8 Hardware TnL". Without it, the garage FOV (and a few other areas) will be too narrow, and water bump mapping won’t work.
DO NOT MINIMIZE THE GAME — restoring it may cause a crash when starting a race. The game does not handle being minimized well!
How to install a mod 4x4 Evo 2 EvoR Edition
1. Extract to any location.
2. Run the file 4x42.exe.
3. When launching, make sure the "Renderer" setting is set to "Direct3D8 Hardware TnL". Without it, the field of view in the garage (and a few other places) will be too narrow, and water bump mapping won’t work.
It is not recommended to minimize the game — after restoring, there is a high chance of a crash when starting a race. The game handles returning from the background very poorly!
