C&C: Battlegrounds lets you imagine what would have happened if the cancelled C&C: Renegade 2 had been released as an expansion for Red Alert 2. This mod transfers the story and concepts of Renegade 2 into the Red Alert 2 world, preserving classic gameplay and Westwood's signature art style.

Story

C&C: Battlegrounds combines both versions of the cancelled Renegade 2 and unfolds after the events of Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge, when the Psychic Domination crisis is left behind. The USA becomes the dominant force, while post-Soviet regions experience economic and political crisis. Demilitarization and political changes provide opportunities for new leaders, but the intrigues of a secret organization lead to a final, desperate invasion and the emergence of a new faction ready to change the course of history.

Gameplay

The mod replicates the classic style of Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge, creating the feel of a second expansion. Factions are slightly reworked, gameplay remains simple while preserving its essence. Besides the new Scavengers faction, graphics, interface, and music have been remade, and 2 campaigns have been added.

Factions

Allies

After long years of global dominance and military conflicts, the USA shifts to cultural warfare. In the late 70s, the public, supporting demilitarization, launches a new "summer of love." Reduced defense industry funding slows down the Allies' technological progress. In the early 80s, the USA withdraws its armed forces from post-Soviet countries and stops supporting the last puppet leader. At this time, a new desperate leader of the former enemy sees an opportunity for invasion. While people have already forgotten about wars and become addicted to the dopamine "needle" of hyperconsumption, a new desperate leader of the former enemy develops a plan to restore their "greatness" through war and invasion.

Soviets (Romanov Insurgents)

On the ruins of poor and conflict-torn Soviet Russia, the Romanov movement emerges, eager to take revenge on the USA. With help from the "Black Hand" organization, a charismatic leader assembles an army, attracting the best USSR scientists, including specialists from World War II who worked on the cyber-soldier project. Redirecting already scarce economic resources to hypermilitarization leads to an even greater economic crisis, as a result of which more and more post-Soviet territory falls into the hands of a new faction...

Scavengers

The Scavengers emerge as an anarchist movement that gains increasing popularity thanks to weakened state influence, propaganda, and funding from the "Black Hand." They modernize old Soviet machines from World War II, restore abandoned factories, and use everything they can find, creating complex trade and logistics routes for a future attack on the system that failed them. All this happens unnoticed by Soviet Russia, which is entirely focused on the USA. Later, this movement will give rise to the Brotherhood of Nod.

When will the C&C: Battlegrounds mod be released?

The mod is being developed by one person, not a team, so work progresses slowly, but according to the author's assurances, it is ongoing and will continue. The author believes the mod won't be very large, so completing all the work alone is quite realistic.

The author has created a plan and divided it into three stages:

Stage I: Playable, but not pretty

  • Scavengers faction available in skirmishes, currently with temporary assets

  • Soviet Union and Allies campaigns completed

  • Soviet Union and Allies factions updated and slightly rebalanced

  • Release as a public alpha

Stage II: Starting to look decent

  • Scavengers faction receives completely custom assets

  • Unique faction interface and updated menu interface

  • Original soundtrack (6-8 tracks in Klepacki's style planned)

  • Release as a public beta

Stage III: Ready for release

  • Complete rebalancing and bug fixes

  • Final polish

  • Version 1.0 release

Each stage will be "done when it's done"™.
