Red Alert 2 YR: New Horizons is a large-scale and ambitious mod for Yuri's Revenge, aiming to reimagine the classic strategy in the spirit of Red Alert 2 by adding more realism, modern weaponry, and new mechanics. The project significantly expands the original factions, introducing dozens of new units, buildings, and technologies, and also includes reworked campaigns from both base games. Battles become larger and more intense, with each side receiving its own set of unique offensive and defensive capabilities.
Visually, the mod appears inconsistent: units from different sides are often executed in different styles and colors, and the abundance of borrowed models from open sources makes the graphics not always cohesive. Despite this, the mod conveys a sense of scale and attention to detail—the author clearly strives to develop the ideas of the original and add realism to Red Alert's mechanics.
One of the key innovations is the Hardcore Mode system. This mode removes futuristic technologies like the Prism for the Allies and Tesla for the Soviets, replacing them with more traditional ones inspired by real prototypes. Factions now use hardpoints—new defensive structures functioning as fortified positions. NATO has grenade launcher and artillery hardpoints, while CSTO has autocannon and AK-630-M2 modifications. Some of them have autonomous power and continue to operate even when power is cut off, while others require centralized supply but possess greater range and power.
The mode also includes logistics elements: players need to monitor fuel and food supplies to maintain army combat readiness, and some features are borrowed from earlier experimental modes such as Infantry Divisions or Mechanised Infantry Mode.
In addition to this, amphibious vehicles have appeared, capable of moving on both land and water. Now landings can be deployed from the sea, and the AAV-7 transport can carry up to 18 soldiers and provide suppressive fire with a grenade launcher and machine gun. This feature works in all game modes, not just hardcore.
With all its rough edges and inconsistent execution, New Horizons remains one of the most large-scale and bold fan projects for Red Alert 2. The mod combines a huge amount of content, new game systems, and an attempt to make war in the Command & Conquer world more realistic without losing the crazy spirit of the original.
