Doomiablo — an ambitious crossover between Doom 2 and Diablo 2. The mod brings Doomguy and his arsenal onto the Diablo 2 engine, swapping the familiar fantasy setting for science-fiction environments and battles against cacodemons. Expect a familiar RPG system with loot, character progression, the classic set of guns, and chainsaw melee combat.
Doomiablo is a unique and promising project from an independent developer, conceived back in 2017. The modification is a full-fledged crossover of two iconic franchises: Doom 2 and Diablo 2. The author set themselves an ambitious goal — to transplant Doom's frantic action onto the isometric rails of an action-RPG, vividly demonstrating the remarkable flexibility of Blizzard's old engine.
Players are presented with the familiar world of Diablo 2, but in a completely unfamiliar setting. Instead of grim fantasy, Doomguy must make his way through the sci-fi environments of spaceships and bases. To create the most realistic and high-quality environment possible, the developer uses the POV-Ray ray tracer, which makes it possible to adapt the classic sprites to the isometric perspective.
The usual endless first-person running gameplay gives way to tactical, isometric gameplay. The hero's enemies become iconic monsters like cacodemons, and the loot they drop directly affects survivability, boosting speed, health, and weapon power.
In the future, flexible environment selection is planned — players will be able to choose whether to clear Doom's traditional tech-base levels or send Doomguy to crush demons right in the streets of Tristram.
The author plans to implement a number of interesting mechanics:
Full-fledged melee combat using the chainsaw;
A detailed dismemberment system, abundant blood, and realistic monster death animations;
An improved interface adapted for Doom;
Local network multiplayer (LAN and VLAN), with a dedicated client server planned for the long term.
The developer has taken the copyright question very seriously to avoid legal claims from Blizzard and Bethesda. The mod is built so that end users need licensed copies of both Diablo 2 and Doom 2 installed to play. A special modification algorithm extracts textures directly from the doom.wad file and converts them on the fly into a format the Diablo 2 engine can understand.
Doomiablo's release date is unknown. The last video showing version 0.3 of the mod was released in 2020, and there has been no progress update since then. The mod's prospects are therefore quite uncertain.
