Mod for Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994) | Category: Total Conversion
Total Chaos — a standalone total conversion based on GZDoom, but essentially representing a full-fledged survival horror game that barely resembles classic Doom. The action takes place on the remote island of Fort Oasis - an abandoned industrial mining settlement whose inhabitants vanished without a trace one day.

After a shipwreck, the protagonist finds himself on the island and receives a strange radio signal from an unknown source. Exploring concrete ruins, residential quarters, tunnels, shopping centers, mines, and the city center, the player gradually uncovers the dark mystery of what happened, finding letters and traces of the past.
The game is divided into 6 chapters, each introducing new varieties of monsters with unique attack patterns. Enemies are extremely dangerous, and resources are constantly scarce. Unlike Doom, the main focus here is on melee combat, survival, and caution. Firearms are rare and ammunition for them is scarce. More often, players must use crowbars, pickaxes, knives, and improvised tools.
The game features an advanced crafting and weapon repair system: items wear out, can be repaired, upgraded, and new ones can be created. A large number of items are scattered across the island, including various armor sets that increase chances of survival.
Technically, Total Chaos utilizes all of GZDoom's capabilities: 3D models, highly detailed textures, modern lighting, making the game visually comparable to projects on Unity or Unreal. This is one of the most impressive examples of how far one can deviate from the original Doom.
In atmosphere and gameplay, the game is closer to Resident Evil than to shooters - tension, resource scarcity, and deadly encounters with monsters create a constant sense of anxiety. Every step through Fort Oasis feels dangerous, and the need to carefully plan each fight and use limited resources makes survival thrilling and unpredictable, turning Total Chaos into a genuinely tense survival horror experience.
