GZDoom works on all modern versions of Windows (from Vista to Windows 11), as well as on Mac and Linux. The engine supports all Doom engine games, including Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and others, with complete translations into more than twenty languages and Unicode support for Latin, Cyrillic, and Hangul scripts.

It is compatible with Hexen editing features (ACS, hubs, new map format) and Boom, and extends them with capabilities such as: colored lighting, 3D floors, portals, advanced polyobjects, custom monsters, weapons, items and player classes, high-resolution textures and sprites, transparency, extended ACS functions.

GZDoom supports numerous formats: music (Ogg Vorbis, MOD, XM, IT, S3M, MIDI, MP3, MUS), sounds (FLAC, WAVE), graphics (PNG, JPEG). The engine removes the limitations of the original Doom, adds high resolution, Quake-style console and keys, crosshair, freelook, jumping, crouching, swimming and flying.
