What does OpenNox do?
Recreates Nox functionality: OpenNox aims to fully reproduce all capabilities of the original Nox game engine. This means it allows you to play the single-player campaign, play online, and use all the game mechanics that were present in the initial version of the game.
Modernizes the game: Since the original Nox was released in 2000, it has a number of limitations on modern systems. OpenNox updates and optimizes the engine for compatibility with new operating systems and hardware. This includes improved support for screen resolutions up to 4K, higher performance, and stability.
Improves multiplayer: Vanilla Nox separates online and LAN multiplayer. The game uses an XWIS server and requires a login/password. OpenNox combines online and LAN games into a single list. It does not require an XWIS password but can still connect to XWIS servers. OpenNox also attempts to automatically forward ports when hosting a game online. For this to work, UPnP must be enabled on your router (in most cases, it's enabled by default).
Provides an open platform: Being open-source, OpenNox allows developers and enthusiasts to study, modify, and extend the game. This opens the door for creating mods, new maps, custom gameplay elements, and even entirely new features that were not envisioned in the original game.
Essentially, OpenNox gives the cult classic game Nox a second life, making it accessible and extensible for modern players and developers.
