QSS's primary goal is to combine single-player stability, modding convenience, and modern networking capabilities. The engine significantly improves performance: high framerates no longer affect physics, and in some scenarios a speed increase of up to ~200% is achieved.
Networking has been substantially reworked. The server only needs to open port 26000, NAT configuration is simplified, master server and IPv6 support have been added, and multiplayer is more stable and predictable overall.
Quakespasm-Spiked pushes past the technical limits of the original engine: lightstyle limits have been raised, lighting and BSPX data handling improved, more accurate light calculation methods added, and modern graphical enhancements are supported.
On the graphics and audio side, the engine adds support for PNG textures, MD3 and IQM models, PK3 archives, and OGG Vorbis for music and sound. Enhanced particle effects and an extended rendering system are also included.
Special attention has been given to modding: the engine includes a large number of SSQC/CSQC extensions, new HUD and UI capabilities, support for additional entities, and tools that allow for more complex and flexible mods.
Known issues from the original engines have also been fixed, including sticky walls, along with improvements to skyrooms, BSP collision, and dynamic objects.
QSS preserves the visual style of Quake while providing a modern technical foundation aimed at both modders and the multiplayer community.
