Compared to QuakeSpasm, vkQuake offers multithreaded rendering and loading, significantly boosting performance. The game can run at framerates above 72 Hz without physics issues, and supports enhanced visuals including dynamic shadows (on ray-tracing capable GPUs), anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and more accurate color reproduction without banding.

The port supports both classic Quake models and enhanced versions (MD5 and MD3), including models from the 2021 rerelease. True color texture and skin formats are supported (.png, .tga, .jpg), along with 8-bit palette emulation and upscaling to preserve the pixelated look.

vkQuake includes a built-in mod menu, custom HUD support, scripted particles, and a modern network protocol. External WAD files and the WAD3 format are also supported, allowing a wider variety of texture palettes.

The port is fully compatible with QuakeSpasm mods, including major projects like Arcane Dimensions and large maps such as The Immortal Lock.
