The AMC Squad is a shooter in the spirit of classics like Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Blood, built on a heavily modified EDuke32. The game offers an expansive story campaign divided into episodes, each with its own theme, style, and locations — from Earth and Hong Kong to outer space, ancient Egypt, and even fantastical worlds.
Players can choose from a wide roster of characters (8 to 11 depending on the episode), each with their own playstyle, weapons, and abilities — ranging from soldiers with firearms to mages, knights, and cyborgs. The gameplay combines the fast-paced feel of classic retro FPS titles with modern elements: character progression, research, economy, and base management, where players can unlock new equipment and upgrades.
The game stands out for its tremendous variety: long and short missions, horror episodes, comedic moments, sprawling levels, and secrets. Enemies range from cultists and mercenaries to aliens, demons, and robots. Additional features include vehicles, cutscenes, and a well-developed progression system.
Despite its high content quality, the game occasionally suffers from uneven balance, difficulty spikes, and inconsistencies in level design due to the large number of contributors. Nevertheless, it is an ambitious project that over the years has grown into one of the most expansive and accomplished shooters ever made on the Build engine.
