Afraid of Monsters: Dark Assistance is a cooperative version of the cult horror mod for Half-Life. You play as drug addict David Leatherhoff, who battles hallucinations and monsters in his own distorted mind. The mod offers both cooperative and single-player gameplay, improved graphics, new weapons, and redesigned maps.

Afraid of Monsters: Dark Assistance was conceived as a multiplayer remake of Afraid of Monsters: Director’s Cut by Team Psykskallar. The project started in December 2014 and officially closed in February 2016 in early development stages, but later in October 2020 the community received an early beta version. This gave birth to a beta build of the project allowing players to complete the first chapters solo or cooperatively. This is not a finished mod, but a rough snapshot of the intended remake.

The story maintains the psychedelic, anxious tone of the original, but is presented more dynamically through cooperative gameplay.

What's changed compared to Director's Cut:

  • Cooperative gameplay alongside single-player mode.

  • Reassembled and shortened levels with focus on dynamics and team gameplay.

  • Updated models and lighting.

  • New and updated weapons; balanced for multiple players.

  • Updated sounds/music and UI elements.

Part of these changes are present in the beta, but the full planned scope of work before release was never completed.
