You begin the game by choosing one of seven classes, each with unique active and passive abilities that influence your playstyle. Your character develops through leveling up and weapon mastery, improving health, ability power, and weapon damage. You can specialize in a few weapon types or use all available options.
Beyond familiar weapons, the game features magical spells with varied effects: from attack and defense to communicating with the recently deceased. The combination of traditional weapons, magic, and unique classes greatly refreshes the gameplay.
The world of Istoria consists of 10 large levels that can be revisited — all changes are saved: opened doors, activated mechanisms, found items, and even monster states. Traveling between levels, you can observe a logical flow of time: day can turn to night, and the map shows special doors along with the corresponding keys you need to find in order to open them.
The story unfolds through terminals with visual materials and dialogues with predetermined deceased characters, adding depth to world exploration. Combat has become more dynamic thanks to new monster mechanics: flying enemies actively maneuver, and enemy attacks have grown more varied and dangerous. Health is restored using med-kits that can be used at any moment, without returning to recharge stations.
The musical score changes dynamically depending on the situation: separate tracks play during map events or enemy attacks. Additionally, the mod includes a survival mode where the goal is to use all your spells and weapons to last as long as possible on a chosen map.
Each class has unique abilities:
Rifleman — grenade explosions pull enemies in, and SMG bullets have increased accuracy;
Fusion Master — charged projectiles become homing;
Timekeeper — freezes time for a short duration;
Deceiver — temporarily subjugates enemies;
Telekinetic — pushes monsters back and deflects projectiles;
Pyrotechnic — instant flamethrower effect, bypassing enemy fire immunity;
Rocket Man — launches homing rockets with an increased blast radius.
Marathon: Istoria is practically a new game in the Marathon universe, offering innovative gameplay, a dynamic story, and a rich single-player campaign that every fan of the series should experience.
