SPRAWL 96 is a total conversion for Quake, created for the first anniversary of SPRAWL and as a tribute to the Quake community — without which the original game would never have existed. The project draws on years of modding experience and resources, reimagining SPRAWL as a 90s-style shooter.

The mod answers the question: "What if SPRAWL had been released in 1996?" This total conversion for Quake brings the key elements of the original — weapons, some of the enemies, and the signature movement system with acrobatics and bullet time — into a reworked Quake engine based on Ironwail.

Gameplay is focused on momentum: responsive weapons, an advanced movement system, bullet time, and vertical level design create the feel of a modern shooter running on a classic engine.

SPRAWL 96 is built with vanilla content compatibility in mind: most standard maps can be played with the new gameplay systems. It also supports LibreQuake, allowing the mod to be run even without the original game.

Special attention has been paid to enemies — their models and animations have been adapted to fit the constraints of the classic engine. The package also includes over 400 assets: models, sounds, textures, and map templates that are free to use in non-commercial mods.

SPRAWL 96 is an experiment and a love letter to classic Quake, bridging old-school sensibilities and modern ideas.

How to Play

  • Sliding: Hold Shift while moving to slide. This gives you a speed boost, and jumping during a slide preserves your momentum. You can chain slides together for continuous movement.

  • Bullet Time: Right mouse button activates bullet time. This consumes the adrenaline meter, which recharges over time.

  • Wall Running: Approach a wall and press jump to start running along it. You can perform up to three jumps before needing to touch the ground to reset. The faster you move, the weaker gravity's effect becomes. For maximum height, perform a slide beforehand.

  • Dodging & Difficulty: With the katana equipped, you can dodge by double-tapping a directional key. Below Hard difficulty, all directions are available; on Hard and Nightmare, only sideways dodges are allowed. You can also dodge in the air or while pushing off a wall. Dodge speed can be adjusted in the menu or disabled entirely.

  • Katana: Hold the attack button and move forward (W) to build up speed. Release the button to perform a powerful dash strike. Immediately after a dodge, you can land a fully charged attack.

  • Armor: Enemies have varying armor levels, and weapons have different armor penetration values that scale with difficulty. Enemies are less protected from behind. Many have weak spots highlighted in yellow when adrenaline is active. Some weak spots are hidden under armor — hitting them is indicated by a red marker.

  • Weapons: Some weapons bypass armor entirely, such as the Gauss Rifle, Lightning Gun, and Grenade Launcher. The Gauss Rifle penetrates multiple enemies and thin walls. Grenades can be destroyed by shooting them. The Lightning Gun deals more damage at range, and its recoil is reduced at high movement speeds. Weapon stats can be viewed in the help menu.
