LibreQuake is an open-source remake of Quake, designed both as a standalone game and as a replacement for the original commercial assets, allowing players to run not only the game itself but also mods without needing to own the original Quake.

The project was founded in 2019 as a spiritual successor to Open Quartz and is developed in the spirit of initiatives such as Freedoom. LibreQuake uses its own assets, fully replacing the original Quake files — including textures, models, sounds, and levels — making it possible to run the game and its modifications without owning a commercial copy of Quake.
Running LibreQuake requires modern source ports such as QuakeSpasm, Ironwail, or vkQuake. The project is still in active development: some levels, models, and sounds are either missing or still being worked on.
LibreQuake is distributed as free software under the Modified BSD License, allowing anyone to freely study, modify, and distribute it.

How to install a fan game LibreQuake
To play LibreQuake, you will need an engine to run the game. Two engines are recommended: IronWail and FTEQW, especially if you plan to play both Deathmatch and singleplayer modes. Other suitable engines include Quakespasm Spiked (QSS), QuakeSpasm, and VkQuake.
Move the id1 (or lq1) folder into the root directory of the engine.
Use the engine's executable to launch LibreQuake.
