Fall From Heaven II retains the familiar foundations of Civilization — city building, technology research, combat, and diplomacy — but each of these areas has been reworked and expanded with new mechanics.

One of the key features is the redesigned tech tree and combat system: unit experience now plays a greater role than sheer numbers. Barbarians are stronger and more aggressive, making early expansion especially risky. Each nation has unique mechanics without breaking balance: dwarves depend on their own treasury, demon worshippers receive troops as Armageddon approaches, and vampires can sacrifice population for experience. Civilization leaders have static portraits but possess unique voice lines and personalities.

The endgame is shaped by a dynamic Armageddon Counter: as the game progresses, the world grows increasingly unstable — horsemen of the apocalypse emerge, plagues spread, natural disasters strike, and diplomacy becomes more complex. The constant threat of the end of the world keeps the late game tense and engaging. Magic is implemented through a system of spheres and spell levels that grant combat and passive advantages. Three types of mages (Sorcery, Summoning, Divine) develop along their own paths, while additional effects — voiced spells, dragon roars, and visual special effects — deepen the atmosphere.

The mod offers 18 scenarios with rich storylines and high-quality writing that require knowledge of English. Players can flexibly customize their game: disabling religions or demons, adjusting random event frequency, creating unique barbarian-heavy starts, or restricting certain options. An achievement system adds both classic and unique goals, including defeating monsters, creating special units, and meeting specific conditions.

For multiplayer and advanced AI, the mod uses add-ons (modmods) — most notably Extramodmod (EMM), which combines AI improvements from MNAI and balance fixes from Erebus in the Balance. This allows AI opponents to intelligently use magic, strategic resources, and civilization-specific abilities, providing genuine competition. The AI can adapt to different scenarios, cast spells effectively, deploy heroes, and manage armies. Some AI civilizations demonstrate particularly high-level strategic thinking, while others do not, creating variety in the gameplay experience.

Fall From Heaven II also enhances the visual and audio aspects of the game: new unit models, unique spell effects, city blessing visuals, and dynamic weather effects bring the world to life. Each nation's music reflects its character — from light and cheerful for the Ljosalfar to dark and oppressive for demons and the shadow races.

Overall, Fall From Heaven II is a mod that profoundly transforms and expands Civilization IV's mechanics, turning it into a deep, layered strategy with RPG elements, magic, heroes, religions, unique scenarios, and a dynamic endgame. It is an essential experience for anyone seeking a rich, living fantasy world within the grand strategy genre.
