Phobos is an ambitious mod for DOOM 3 that reimagines the game by shifting the focus from pure action to exploration, story, and puzzles. It is closer in spirit to narrative-driven shooters like Half-Life or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight.

The mod significantly reworks the weapons: the new shotgun stands out in particular, feeling more powerful and satisfying than the original. All other guns have also received changes to sounds, damage, and visual effects, making every encounter with the forces of Hell as spectacular as possible. Enemies have been both reworked and expanded with new additions — including classic demons adapted to the DOOM 3 style. Combat is faster, with more enemies on screen at once.

Special attention has been paid to the story. Unlike the original, the protagonist here is a fully fleshed-out character with a backstory and a voice. The narrative unfolds through dialogue and the environment, leaving room for interpretation and keeping the intrigue alive until the very end — though at times it feels detached from the classic spirit of DOOM.

Phobos's greatest strength is its level design: large, detailed locations with branching structures, secrets, and puzzles. The game is divided into several chapters. The first episode stands out for its quality of execution, while the second of the three is the weakest. In the first, you are introduced to the story and treated to impressive exploration of Mars's residential sectors. The second puts your endurance to the test in labyrinthine industrial tunnels with an emphasis on navigation. Finally, the third throws you into horror sections and large-scale battles that push the id Tech 4 engine to its limits.

Phobos is a must-play mod for every DOOM fan who appreciates quality level design and a grim sci-fi atmosphere.

How to install a mod DOOM 3: Phobos

  1. Move the tfphobos folder to the Doom 3 root directory.

  2. Since you won't be able to launch Doom 3: Phobos through the mod list in the Doom 3 or Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil menu, you need to create a DOOM3.exe shortcut, or place the Phobos.bat file in the Doom 3 root directory and run it.

    • If you want to create a shortcut manually, after creating it go to the shortcut properties and in the Target field enter: "[Doom3Dir]\DOOM3.exe" +set fs_game tfphobos +set fs_game_base d3xp

    • If you have Doom 3 on Steam, you can also set +set fs_game tfphobos +set fs_game_base d3xp in the Doom 3 properties through the Steam client.

    • If you have Doom 3 through GoG, you can also set +set fs_game tfphobos +set fs_game_base d3xp in the Doom 3 settings by adding a new custom executable.

  3. Play!

The developers do not guarantee that the original campaign or multiplayer in Doom 3 or Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil will work with Doom 3: Phobos. We also do not guarantee that any additional mods you install yourself will work with Doom 3: Phobos. Do this at your own risk. They will not be able to help you troubleshoot any issues that arise.

If you encounter any problems, try installing Doom 3: Phobos on a fresh copy of Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, without any other mods installed.

There is no CD-KEY entry window in Doom 3: Phobos. If you are playing Doom 3: Phobos with a clean install of Doom 3, you need to launch Doom 3 without Doom 3: Phobos and enter your CD-KEY, or use the Dhewm 3 port — but in that case you will need to install an unofficial compatibility patch.

For AMD users experiencing issues (thanks to Stradex and Anton for the info):

  1. Create a copy of doom3.exe named phobos.exe

  2. Edit the .bat file to use Phobos.exe

If you are experiencing any other strange graphics issues, try disabling HDR and bloom if the mod uses them.

If you are experiencing graphics issues, try the following:

  • If the game shows excessive upscaling, set image_downsize to 0

  • If the audio has too much echo, make sure EAX 4.0 HD is disabled

  • If you see "white gloves", set image_usePrecompressedTextures to 0 instead of 1
