Monsters now use attack synchronization and attack chains: some enemies can coordinate with others' actions, creating real threats for the player. Each enemy has a fear mechanic — by killing an enemy's allies or dealing heavy damage, you can make them temporarily flee. This adds a strategic element to combat.

Each weapon has a unique role:

  • Fist and Chainsaw — melee combat with health recovery under Berserk.

  • Pistol, SMG, and PSMG — precise, weak weapons for distant and minor targets.

  • Shotguns and SSG — powerful damage with limited rate of fire.

  • Chaingun and Rocket Launcher — high firepower and crowd control.

  • Plasma Gun and BFG — special options for mass attacks and strategic battle control.

The mod improves starting and classic weapons and makes item collection smarter — for example, if you already have maximum health, you won't be able to pick up and waste a medkit.

All monsters have been reworked: imps, pinkies, spectres, barons, mancubi, and bosses have become more dangerous and diverse while preserving Doom's original spirit. Spectres create illusory clones, while large demons use new attacks and synchronization.

Babel transforms classic Doom into a strategically deep and dynamic game, preserving the original's spirit while making every fight more dangerous and interesting. The rework of enemies, weapons, and combat systems makes the mod essential for fans seeking a fresh take on the classic.

Babel is best played on Erelim difficulty, on maps corresponding to the original IWADs. For MEGAWADs, the mod may be too difficult due to the reworked enemy aggression.

How to install a mod Babel

To run the mod, you will need the GZDoom engine and doom.wad, doom2.wad, or one of the FreeDoom IWADs

  1. Make sure that doom.wad / doom2.wad or freedoom1.wad / freedoom2.wad is located in the GZDoom folder

  2. Move the mod's .pk3 file to the GZDoom folder

  3. Drag and drop the .pk3 file onto gzdoom.exe

  4. Play!

You can also create a Launcher.bat. This is useful for launching more complex mod builds where the loading order of mods is important, or to launch the game via a shortcut.

How to create a launcher for running mods based on GZDoom

Create a text file in the GZDoom folder, you can name it Launcher. The text can look like this, depending on which files you're using:

gzdoom.exe -iwad freedoom2.wad -file "brutalv22test4.pk3"

-iwad must always be first, and the number of files after -file can be unlimited, just write them in quotes separated by spaces, like this:

gzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file "addon1.pk3" "addon2.pk3" "addon3.pk3" "addon4.pk3"

Change its format from .txt to .bat by simply renaming it. Now you can launch your builds with a double-click on this launcher.
