Brutal Doom 64 is a reimagining of Doom 64 through the lens of Brutal Doom with a focus on atmosphere. The mod intensifies the sense of horror through dynamic lighting, deep sound design, echoing gunshots and screams, updated monster and weapon sprites. The game feels darker, with a noticeably more oppressive atmosphere than the original.
Gameplay differs significantly from classic Brutal Doom. Alternative fire, reloading, and other characteristic Brutal Doom elements have been removed to preserve the Doom 64 atmosphere. Weapons are closer to vanilla Doom 64, while enemies are faster, more aggressive, and more dangerous, making combat extremely harsh and often merciless. Because of this, the balance feels deliberately shifted toward survival rather than a sense of superiority over enemies.
The mod adds new and restored elements, including an introductory prologue, additional scenes, some enemies and weapons that were cut or unavailable in the original. However, the mod isn't always consistent in its character, balancing between pure horror and brutal action, which creates noticeable contrasts in the feel of different episodes.
Despite controversial decisions in balance and a reduced set of Brutal Doom mechanics, Brutal Doom 64 is often considered one of the best ways to play Doom 64 on PC. It emphasizes the original's strengths—atmosphere, sound, and sense of threat—and transforms the familiar campaign into a harsher, more unsettling, and memorable experience.
