Lost in Darkness transforms DOOM into a ruthless survival horror. You are an exorcist in a grim and hostile world, where fear and the unknown weigh on you no less than the enemies themselves. Ammunition, medical supplies, and useful items are scarce here, so every fight requires calculation, and melee combat becomes a vital skill, especially considering that you can't shoot accurately — weapons have very high bullet spread.

You'll remember the enemies in this mod for a long time: almost every entity has its own attacks, behavior, strengths and weaknesses. Blind shooting doesn't work — you need to study enemies and their tactics, choose the right moment to strike, especially since weapons here have enormous bullet spread. Mistakes are punished quickly, and death will be a frequent companion at first.

Level exploration is accompanied by additional threats. Anomalies, radiation zones, and hazardous environments force you to use auxiliary tools like bolts and gas masks, carefully monitor your surroundings, and adapt to conditions. Each level feels like a separate trial, requiring patience and understanding of this world's rules.

The atmosphere deserves special mention. The mod actively uses religious motifs and occultism, combining them with influences from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., METRO, Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi, Faith: The Unholy Trinity, and Darkwood. The dark visual style and powerful sound design amplify tension and a sense of hopelessness, while immersive sim elements give the player more freedom in choosing their approach to survival.

Lost in Darkness is a story about suffering, fear, and rare moments of relief that weave together, and only faith helps you survive another step into the darkness.

Tips The balance in Lost in Darkness isn't perfect, so the author recommends starting to play on the original Doom 2 maps. It's also recommended to play with headphones and without music. Also keep in mind that due to the mod's specific nature, saving in the mod = cheats. Use the Bible.

How to install a mod Lost in Darkness

1. You will need the GZDoom v4.11.3 engine (the mod won't run on newer versions).

2. Extract the archive and move the contents of the Lost in Darkness folder to the GZDoom root directory.

3. Create a text file for the correct mod file loading order. The loading order should be as follows:

  1. d2-in-d1-v3 (adds monsters and SSG from Doom 2 to Doom 1) (ALWAYS LOAD FIRST) (If you're playing Doom 2 or wads for it, don't use this addon or the game won't start)

  2. Lost in Darkness (main mod)

  3. Fix20x9 (fixes graphics for 20x9 aspect ratio)

  4. (Optional) gearbox-v0.7.2.1 (weapon and item selection wheel)

  5. (Optional) Universal Rain and Snow (weather effects, rain, snow, ash)

  6. (Optional) True dark (completely removes lighting from levels)

  7. (Optional) D64TEX (good textures)

  8. (Optional) LID_Shotgun skin (alternative shotgun skin)

To avoid typing this manually, you can use this template (you can use a different iwad), just keep in mind that mod file names may change over time due to version updates, so check them. Current for Lost in Darkness v2.1.29:

gzdoom -iwad "freedoom1.wad" -file "d2-in-d1-v3.pk3" "Lost in Darkness [2.1.29].pk3" "Fix20x9.pk3" "LID_Gearbox v0.7.2.pk3" "Universal Rain and Snow v3(GZD).pk3" "True dark.pk3" "D64TEX.PK3" "LID_Shotgun skin.pk3"

4. Next, rename the .txt text file to .bat, for example giving it the name Launcher.bat.

5. Play!
