The Space Pirate is an ambitious and deep gameplay modification built on the GZDoom engine that takes Doom's mechanics to a whole new level. You play as Melody Crosswell — a charismatic and self-confident space pirate who travels across a universe engulfed in flames in search of wealth and fame. Mel is fully voiced by professional actors, and her adventures are accompanied by a powerful original soundtrack.
The project offers a unique hybrid gameplay experience combining the dynamics of a classic first-person shooter with the depth of the best slashers. The developers have laid such a powerful foundation that the mod has every chance of growing into a full standalone game.
Combat System and Advanced Mechanics
The mod's crown jewel is an incredibly polished, addictive, and deep melee combat system that surpasses many popular Doom mods. Once you master the basic controls, you can build spectacular combo chains and use acrobatics to your advantage.
Mel's unique moves and maneuvers:
Mag Grapple: Press and hold the "Trait" key (must be assigned in the control settings menu), then press the primary fire button to perform a Mag Grapple — this pulls enemies toward you!
Mag Spear: A powerful jump kick that deals massive damage! Press and hold the "Trait" key, then press the alternate fire button while airborne!
Stasis Uppercut: Press and hold the fire button while Mel's melee is selected to charge a Stasis Uppercut! This maneuver is extremely powerful and places enemies into a stasis field in midair, where they can be either shot or attacked in melee!
Power Bank: Lets you store an instant charge for the Stasis Uppercut, reducing charge time when you press the "Taunt" key (must be assigned in the control menu). If the charge is successfully stored, a lightning bolt icon will appear next to the weapon icon on the HUD. Note: you can immediately cancel the taunt animation and perform a near-instant Stasis Uppercut (Power Bank cancel).
Wall Jump: After touching a wall during a jump, you can push off it by pressing the jump key again. A sound cue plays when a wall jump becomes available, so stay alert!
Slip Dash: A great maneuver performed by pressing the crouch key upon landing after a jump. It lets you burst forward at high speed for a brief moment.
The combat system is further enhanced by a hitstop mechanic — a micro-pause in time at the moment of impact — which adds tactile feedback, a sense of weight, and helps you keep your bearings in the chaos. The mod offers a choice of starting firearm loadouts for different playstyles, though the melee-only mode delivers a truly unique experience all its own.
Game Modes
At the current stage of development, players have access to the First Hunt demo, centered around arena-based gameplay loops.
Bounty Hunters: A Time Attack arena mode. Your goal is to destroy waves of enemies for maximum score and a cash payout. Gameplay revolves around collecting scattered clocks: destroying alarm clocks extends the timer, increases difficulty, and summons more enemies to the arena.
Unlimited Battle Mod: An endless battle mode for those who want to fight without any time restrictions.
The Space Pirate supports cross-mod compatibility. You can run it on any custom maps, plug in third-party monster packs, or add mods like Voxel Doom, making the gameplay endlessly replayable.
How to install a mod The Space Pirate
To run the mod, you will need the GZDoom engine and doom.wad, doom2.wad, or one of the FreeDoom IWADs
Make sure that doom.wad / doom2.wad or freedoom1.wad / freedoom2.wad is located in the GZDoom folder
Move the mod's .pk3 file to the GZDoom folder
Drag and drop the .pk3 file onto gzdoom.exe
Play!
You can also create a Launcher.bat. This is useful for launching more complex mod builds where the loading order of mods is important, or to launch the game via a shortcut.
How to create a launcher for running mods based on GZDoom
Create a text file in the GZDoom folder, you can name it Launcher. The text can look like this, depending on which files you're using:
gzdoom.exe -iwad freedoom2.wad -file "brutalv22test4.pk3"-iwad must always be first, and the number of files after -file can be unlimited, just write them in quotes separated by spaces, like this:
gzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file "addon1.pk3" "addon2.pk3" "addon3.pk3" "addon4.pk3"Change its format from .txt to .bat by simply renaming it. Now you can launch your builds with a double-click on this launcher.
