Unlike many similar projects, Embers Of Armageddon does not simply imitate the style of the modern entries in the series — it practically recreates their feel, pacing, and progression system in full.
The mod completely overhauls the player's arsenal: each weapon has unique mechanics and an alternate fire mode. The chaingun requires spinning up before firing, the shotgun supports interchangeable modules, and the plasma weapon can overheat. The chainsaw functions as a resource and ammo tool, just as in DOOM (2016), while the BFG and super shotgun replicate the characteristics of the original game.
The movement system also significantly changes classic Doom. The player gains double jumps, dashes, ledge grabbing, and high mobility that allows active use of level verticality. Glory kills let you finish off stunned enemies to restore health, and the finisher animations vary depending on the enemy's position.
Embers Of Armageddon features a full progression system: runes, suit upgrades, weapon mods, argent cells, and special upgrade points that can be earned by exploring maps and completing challenges. Many upgrades require fulfilling additional conditions to unlock new modification tiers.
The mod stands out for its high-quality animations, effects, and sound design, and also offers flexible HUD and balance settings. Players can adjust the HUD appearance, progression speed, and resource drop rates. The project is compatible with many maps and monster packs, making it an excellent choice for replaying classic megawads in the style of DOOM (2016).
How to install a mod Embers Of Armageddon
To run the mod, you will need the GZDoom engine and doom.wad, doom2.wad, or one of the FreeDoom IWADs
Make sure that doom.wad / doom2.wad or freedoom1.wad / freedoom2.wad is located in the GZDoom folder
Move the mod's .pk3 files to the folder with GZDoom
Drag and drop the .pk3 files onto gzdoom.exe
Play!
You can also create a Launcher.bat. This is useful for launching more complex mod builds where the loading order of mods is important, or to launch the game via a shortcut.
How to create a launcher for running mods based on GZDoom
Create a text file in the GZDoom folder, you can name it Launcher. The text can look like this, depending on which files you're using:
gzdoom.exe -iwad freedoom2.wad -file "brutalv22test4.pk3"-iwad must always be first, and the number of files after -file can be unlimited, just write them in quotes separated by spaces, like this:
gzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file "addon1.pk3" "addon2.pk3" "addon3.pk3" "addon4.pk3"Change its format from .txt to .bat by simply renaming it. Now you can launch your builds with a double-click on this launcher.
