OpenRA is an open-source engine that recreates classic RTS games from the Command & Conquer series and Dune 2000. It rewrites the original engine from scratch, supports modern operating systems, online multiplayer, improved graphics and modifications, but requires the original game files for full functionality.

Command & Conquer once set the standards for real-time strategy games, offering easy-to-learn but deep strategic gameplay that allowed for large-scale and spectacular battles. After Electronic Arts bought Westwood Studios in 1998 and closed it in 2003, the series lost some of its popularity, but the original games, especially Red Alert, remain beloved by RTS fans. Over time, the classics began to show their age, but OpenRA brought these games back to life by adding numerous improvements and settings. With it, you can play C&C: Tiberian Dawn, C&C: Red Alert, and Dune 2000, complete single missions, fight bots, and participate in online battles.

The project was created with love: the developers added new features carefully, improving the games while preserving the original gameplay. RTS fans should definitely try OpenRA, which updates the classic Command & Conquer and Dune 2000, making them modern – something EA has stubbornly refused to do in recent years. The grandfather of RTS has returned and is in better shape than ever!

Additionally, OpenRA supports community modifications, allowing even greater changes to the original games.

The engine implements conveniences such as choosing between RMB and classic LMB control schemes, redesigned sidebar interface, support for replays and streams, "fog of war", capturing civilian buildings to use infantry advantages, as well as an experience system for units that improves their stats with new ranks.

Tiberian Dawn tells the story of the Global Defense Initiative's struggle against a mysterious terrorist organization and the toxic mineral tiberium, slowly spreading across Earth.

Red Alert unfolds in an alternate history: Hitler is killed, the Third Reich doesn't exist, and the Soviet Union tries to capture all of Europe, leading to a global confrontation with the Allies.

Dune 2000 transports the player to the desert planet Arrakis, where three great houses fight for the valuable resource spice. Whoever controls the spice controls the universe, facing threats from alien life.

If the graphics in OpenRA seem too different from the original, you can enable "Enable double pixeling" in the settings to get a more familiar Command & Conquer visual style.

The developers continue working on the project: they plan to release an OpenRA version for C&C: Tiberian Sun.

How to install an engine OpenRA

  1. Extract the archive to a folder.

  2. Launch the game.

  3. On first launch, you will be prompted to download a simplified version necessary for the game to work. But if you want the full version with all soundtrack and videos, you need to download and mount images of the original games, then click the "Detect Disc or Installation" button. The game will automatically find and install all necessary files from your mounted disc.

    • Later you can return to this OpenRA menu via the "Manage Content" button to download missing content. Fortunately, Electronic Arts made two of the three OpenRA-supported games free — Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn. Images of these games can be downloaded here.

  4. Play!
