Currently, the first two episodes are available, featuring 23 levels (including bonus maps). Players will face two unique bosses, several new enemy types, and wield new weapons with unusual, skill-dependent mechanics. Additional power-ups have been added that noticeably affect playstyle.

The story continues the ideas of the original Quake. After the destruction of Shub-Niggurath, the hero spends years wandering through dimensions, holding back the remnants of the ancient evil. Over time he fades into oblivion, but awakens once more when Yog-Sothoth begins distorting reality, building armies and attempting to reclaim physical form. The player must once again become the defender and stop the threat.

One of the key features of Dwell is its level design. The levels are large in scale, architecturally thoughtful, and atmospherically strong — ranging from more "grounded" locations to increasingly alien and nightmarish spaces as the player progresses. Maps are often visually and thematically connected, creating a sense of a unified, living world.

Gameplay emphasizes dynamic and demanding combat. Players are regularly placed in dense combat situations with large numbers of enemies and limited space, requiring quick reflexes and smart resource management. The experience includes both intense arenas and more open sections with exploration, secrets, and platforming challenges.

The musical score plays an important role, reinforcing the atmosphere and highlighting the uniqueness of each location. Visual style, lighting, and sound design work together to create a memorable and cohesive impression.

Despite its high quality, the mod is not without flaws: certain levels may feel confusing, and some encounters can be excessively intense, especially on higher difficulty settings. Nevertheless, Dwell stands out as one of the most ambitious and polished projects for Quake, offering a deep, atmospheric, and content-rich experience.
