4x4 Evolution (or 4x4 EVO) is an arcade off-road racing simulator released in 2000 by Terminal Reality. It was one of the first racing games to fully support user-made tracks and featured full online multiplayer - including cross-platform play between PC, Dreamcast, and Mac.

Unlike other arcade racers of its time, 4x4 EVO focused on off-road racing with realistic physics, long routes, and GPS-based navigation. Players drove licensed SUVs and trucks (Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, and others), making their way through swamps, canyons, jungles, and deserts. The game didn’t feature a story mode, but it offered a rich career system with part upgrades, tuning, and a variety of championships.

The game carved out a special place in the modding scene. 4x4 EVO was designed with openness in mind: the developers provided tools to create custom tracks, and the community quickly began producing user-made maps, vehicles, and even "missions" with triggers and behavior logic. Fan websites, editors, and utilities emerged, and over time, the game became a platform for off-road simulation enthusiasts.
