Fate is a mod that gives a second life to the canceled game Fate by DogBone Software. In 1996, the developers only managed to release a demo on the Build Engine before the project was shut down. This mod fully transfers and expands these ideas onto the GZDoom platform, replacing absolutely all assets: graphics, sounds, and music.

The gameplay requires active use of jumping, crouching, and free mouse-look. The author preserved the spirit and some mechanics of the original (such as escaping a prison cell, destructible barrels, and searching for weapon parts), while also adding many modern elements.

Key features and mechanics

  • Unlike Doom's classic 200% health cap, here the limit is raised to 400%. Items are color-coded: green heals up to 100%, blue up to 200%, red up to 300%, and gold up to the maximum of 400%. Armor color determines the protection level (gold armor provides a record 80% damage resistance).

  • The game features 9 weapon types, each with an alternate attack mode. The most powerful guns (starting from slot 6) can't be found whole — you'll have to assemble them from three parts scattered across the levels.

  • Power-ups (such as the regeneration eye, high-jump boots, or time freeze) work strictly until the end of the current map and burn out when moving to the next one. The same rule applies to backpacks.

The combat system forces you to combine tactics. Regular fists allow combo strings, while their alternate attack creates a vortex that reflects projectiles. Mass-destruction weapons, like the plasma club, create poison clouds that can be detonated for a chain reaction.

You'll face 14 types of enemies with unique behavior:

  • Lesyrgian Soldiers and Commandos, capable of throwing the player into the air. They drop a machine gun part upon death.

  • Troll Mages, who can play dead (always worth a follow-up shot).

  • Drones, which pull you toward them with a tractor beam and activate shields when wounded.

  • Unique bosses, including the Sanctuary Guardian and Sarx aboard his warship.

In total, Fate offers 23 maps split into three major sections:

  • Chapter 1: The All Father (9 levels): a journey from an ancient temple and a coastal village to the sanctuary, plus 2 secret levels.

  • Chapter 2: Lesyrgian Stronghold (10 levels): a space-themed chapter featuring a shuttle hijacking, a spaceport, a power plant, the final battle, and 3 secret areas.

  • Demo Chapter (4 levels): an authentic recreation of the very maps from the original 1996 demo.

To access secret locations, you'll need to thoroughly explore the environment in search of blue gems.
