Epochs of Enmity (EoE) is a major fan-made episode for Quake, created by a group of experienced mappers with the goal of recreating the feel of a "classic" expansion. The project is conceived as an unofficial sixth episode continuing the ideas of Dimension of the Past, while offering a more diverse and contemporary approach to level design.
The player takes on the role of the Ranger, traveling through time to stop an evil force distorting the very fabric of reality. The maps are arranged in a loose chronological order — from ruins and villages to medieval castles — gradually transitioning into more surreal and unusual locations. Visually, the maps alternate between styles ranging from tech bases to Gothic and Greco-Roman motifs. Even the more open levels remain intuitive thanks to their well-considered structure.
Despite the vanilla foundation, the authors introduced a set of restrictions and guidelines: levels are designed for approximately 100 enemies, must include a Quad Damage, and avoid the use of third-party models and sounds. At the same time, modern visual elements are permitted — colored lighting, fog, and skyboxes — giving the game a fresh look without losing the atmosphere of the original.
The gameplay combines the classic Quake style with modern solutions: large-scale battles, tactical combat, and carefully considered enemy placement. Levels vary in difficulty and reach their peak in the finale, where monster respawning is actively used to increase challenge, traps are employed, and Quad Damage is applied with purpose.
Although the episode feels more modern than classic expansions, it remains true to the spirit of the original and offers one of the most engaging experiences for fans of Quake.
How to install a mod Epochs of Enmity
To run Epochs of Enmity, it is recommended to use QuakeSpasm or one of its forks (QuakeSpasm-Spiked, IronWail or VkQuake). EoE has also been successfully tested with DarkPlaces, FTE and Mark V (however, music will NOT play). Using other ports may produce mixed results.
Move the eoe folder into the game's root directory.
Launch the game, open the console with the ~ key and type game eoe, or create a shortcut to the executable and add -game eoe to the target field, then launch the game through it.
Play!
