Sid Meier’s Civilization is a revolutionary turn-based global strategy released in 1991 that became the foundational project of the 4X genre (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate). The game lets players take control of one of the historical civilizations and lead it from ancient times to the modern age and beyond.
Gameplay revolves around developing the economy, science, diplomacy, and military, researching new technologies, exploring territories, and interacting with other civilizations. Players build cities, manage resources, and make strategic decisions on a turn-based map to ensure their people's prosperity and achieve victory.
Despite relatively simple graphics and interface by modern standards, the game impressed with its depth of mechanics, scale, and possibilities. Civilization laid the groundwork that continues to evolve in later games of the series and inspires many other strategy games.
Over time, the fan community created modifications that add new scenarios, fix bugs, provide visual improvements, and even rewrite the game engine. This once again proves that great games, no matter how old, remain relevant and continue to be in demand even after many years.
